Para Canoe
Amy, 25, is starting para canoe (kayaking) after playing wheelchair basketball since the age of eight. Amy is hoping to be selected for the Australian Para canoe team to compete at the World Championships in 2014. She first tried para canoe two years ago, but has had to overcome a number of injuries before she could begin training in her new sport.
Amy is a Sunshine Coast local from Currimundi, progressing in Paracanoe after 2-3 years off from her sporting commitments, however she has had success in Wheelchair basketball since the age of 8 and has high aims in Paracanoe.
Amy’s success in Wheelchair Basketball includes representing Queensland at only 8 years old and making the U25 Australian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Squad, which was her highlight so far in her sporting career.
Amy aims to get back to the Australian level for Wheelchair Basketball after her injuries prevented her progressing her talents however allowed her to take up Paracanoe, training several times a week with a local coach through the Sunshine Coast Kayaking Club.
After seeing an advertisement for a come and try Paracanoe day a couple of years ago on the Sunshine Coast, Amy met Andrea Wood from Paracanoe Australia and was introduced to the K1.
Amy is hoping to be selected in the Paracanoe team to represent Australia in the World Championships in Moscow in August 2014.
Amy is a previous Sporting Dreams grant recipient and this year will receive an introductory grant to help her achieve her dreams in Paracanoe.
